Our Story
Hi, I’m Andrew! A Park Slope Dad who’s thought a lot about helping children find their unique gift, or what I like to call, “their thing.”
I discovered music can be a great path for personal development and discovery, even if they never become a professional musician. And there’s now tons of studies proving the brain development benefits of learning an instrument.
But how did I get here? It’s the early 2000s and my son Alejandro is in preschool. It’s a lovely school and yet, I can’t leave the classroom. Alejandro has deep attachment issues. He is so terrified that I have to sit in the corner of the class.
Through the Musicolor Method, we merge playful melodies with pivotal life skills ensuring your child looks forward to every lesson.
Lessons in the familiar surrounds of home mean a relaxed child, optimal for absorbing both music and life skills.
Inculcating values of discipline and routine becomes more effective in a familiar setting, turning daily home routines into learning experiences.
Early introduction to music fosters confidence, helping them express, communicate, and shite even beyond the piano.
By making lessons a joyous home event, we inspire a lifelong curiosity and love for learning.

"My daughter has been a student at Park Slope Music Lessons for years and it's been a fabulous experience. Piano has helped provide her with a different approach to thinking and learning and she truly enjoys it. The instructors are fantastic and do an amazing job connecting with each student and tailoring their approach to their individual needs. Thank you so much!"
- Kevin DeNoia
"My daughter has never sought to play music professionally, so her continued commitment to her weekly lessons for 12+ years (even with her busy high school schedule), is a testament to how much she truly enjoys being part of the Park Slope Music Lessons family!"
- Caroline Lee
We recommend all children start with at least 6 months of piano/keyboard. Because it is physically easier to produce sound, and is visually logically laid out, it builds a foundation quickly and makes comprehension faster. This makes transferring to ANY other instrument much quicker, enjoyable and understandable. However, for children above the age of 8 years old, it is possible to start on any instrument, though we highly recommend keyboard as a foundation.

We always start with two trial lessons to ensure the best match between your child and the teacher. These trial lessons are 30 minutes each, one week apart and are $75 each. What we are looking for is a strong rapport between you, your child and teacher and that practice is happening, ideally daily, and there is enthusiasm about going forward. If everything is great, we will move to monthly tuition.

We have 3 makeup credits per semester. Ask your teacher to reschedule. There are no refunds for missed lessons.

We start with playing first using color as educational scaffolding. This builds instant excitement, enthusiasm and confidence to keep going when things get more complicated. Learning to read music is not going to happen overnight, in a week or even months. It can take years.
Yes we do - our Penguin Pals class is exactly that. Learn more and sign up here.
Yes we do. Our music program helps young people activate life skills through music. We would like to make it as accessible as possible, and have limited scholarships available each year for partially subsidized lessons. Please apply here.

At Musicolor Method Park Slope, we hold an opinion that music is not only about learning to play an instrument; rather it is everything that teaches some life skills, and one of those valuable life skills structure which we would like to teach in our students is poise. Practice of poise allows young children to gain confidence, grace, and control in every area of their lives be it a difficult piano piece, or be it strumming a simple song on the ukulele.
In the case of very young, still developing children, where we teach music, we do not only concentrate on the technique and network aspects of music. We seek to develop an ability within students to have poise on stage and off stage too. We strive to use music lessons to enhance self-expression while also fostering calmness, equilibrium and self-restraint. Through this particular pedagogy, children come to appreciate that poise is not limited to one’s instrument, instead it is in the transverse relationships and any form of adversity that they have to face as they develop themselves.
As for the Musicolor Method’s clients, we have several offers for all the young music lovers:
piano
voice
guitar
ukulele
bass
flute
saxophone
clarinet
trumpet
trombone
flugelhorn
drums/percussion
violin
viola
tuba
songwriting
… and other implements.
In every of the mentioned classes, the teachers not only give the learner the notes and rhythms, but also explain the goal of accomplishing poise through proper posture, breathing, attention etc. If your child is about to take the first steps with a violin bow in their hands or sing their favorite song at full volume, rest assured they will feel poise and alone will achieve it at every stage.
Performative dimensions provide sound ways of acquiring poise. Our students are given the chance to actually go out there and perform, which goes a long way in boosting the students confidence and also their ability to remain composed in the midst of anxiety. From our small but fit for purpose recitals through to community events, our students have ample learning opportunities towards curbing butterflies in the tummy before a performance and striking a pose, and performing their music, dancing, and singing with a grimace and a grin.
It is with pleasure that I highlight Musicolor Method’s activities in and around the Park Slope area in Boerum Hill, Gowanus, Kensington, Dumbo, Windsor Terrace, Morningside Heights, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, South Slope, North Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Williamsburg, Crown Heights, Sunset Park, Bed Stuy, and occasionally even the Upper West Side. Regardless of where you are, we work with children encouraging them to use their musical instruments of expression and helping them build developmental poise that will help them throughtout their lives.
In Musicolor Method, music is a second language for all children, and it is as interesting as it is entertaining and educational. Equally important, poise is a lesson we teach. We consider music as a pathway and we walk the learners through it with care and appreciate the need for grace in performance and that it is a life-long art.
