Our Story
Hi, I’m Andrew! A Park Slope Dad who’s thought a lot about helping children find their unique gift, or what I like to call, “their thing.”
I discovered music can be a great path for personal development and discovery, even if they never become a professional musician. And there’s now tons of studies proving the brain development benefits of learning an instrument.
But how did I get here? It’s the early 2000s and my son Alejandro is in preschool. It’s a lovely school and yet, I can’t leave the classroom. Alejandro has deep attachment issues. He is so terrified that I have to sit in the corner of the class.
Through the Musicolor Method, we merge playful melodies with pivotal life skills ensuring your child looks forward to every lesson.
Lessons in the familiar surrounds of home mean a relaxed child, optimal for absorbing both music and life skills.
Inculcating values of discipline and routine becomes more effective in a familiar setting, turning daily home routines into learning experiences.
Early introduction to music fosters confidence, helping them express, communicate, and shite even beyond the piano.
By making lessons a joyous home event, we inspire a lifelong curiosity and love for learning.

"My daughter has been a student at Park Slope Music Lessons for years and it's been a fabulous experience. Piano has helped provide her with a different approach to thinking and learning and she truly enjoys it. The instructors are fantastic and do an amazing job connecting with each student and tailoring their approach to their individual needs. Thank you so much!"
- Kevin DeNoia
"My daughter has never sought to play music professionally, so her continued commitment to her weekly lessons for 12+ years (even with her busy high school schedule), is a testament to how much she truly enjoys being part of the Park Slope Music Lessons family!"
- Caroline Lee
We recommend all children start with at least 6 months of piano/keyboard. Because it is physically easier to produce sound, and is visually logically laid out, it builds a foundation quickly and makes comprehension faster. This makes transferring to ANY other instrument much quicker, enjoyable and understandable. However, for children above the age of 8 years old, it is possible to start on any instrument, though we highly recommend keyboard as a foundation.

The Musicolor Method introduces a breakthrough way of teaching music to young children by associating musical notes with colors. This system eliminates the barriers posed by traditional music notation, which can be difficult for children who are too young to read. By using colors as a direct representation of musical notes, the method makes it easier for children to learn and understand music, engaging them with visual stimuli they are already familiar with.
The creation of the Musicolor Method was sparked by a personal challenge. Andrew Ingkavet, a musician and father, found that conventional music lessons were not suitable for his young son, Alejandro. Frustrated by the lack of resources for children under the age of seven, Ingkavet used his background in design to develop a system that catered to young learners. This led to the creation of an innovative curriculum that blended his knowledge of music and design, ultimately making music more accessible and enjoyable for children.
One of the key principles of the Musicolor Method is the emphasis on fun and creativity. Rather than approaching music learning as a rigid or formal task, the method encourages children to explore music in a relaxed and enjoyable way. The playful approach not only keeps children engaged but also helps them develop crucial skills like discipline and problem-solving, fostering both musical abilities and overall cognitive growth.
For children taking music lessons, in particular, we offer lessons for the following musical instruments:
Piano
Voice
Guitar
Ukulele
Bass
Flute
Saxophone
Clarinet
Trumpet
Trombone
Flugelhorn
Drums & percussion
Violin
Violin
Tuba
Songwriting
And more!
Since its inception, the Musicolor Method has grown significantly. Initially a small project aimed at helping his son, Ingkavet has trained dozens of teachers who now share his approach with thousands of students. The program has expanded across various locations, providing personalized music lessons in multiple instruments, including piano, guitar, voice, and even brass and woodwind instruments. The method's success continues to attract parents looking for innovative and effective ways to introduce music into their children's lives.
The ultimate goal of the Musicolor Method is to foster a lifelong love of learning and music. Students are not only taught how to play an instrument but also encouraged to develop a passion for creative expression. The method emphasizes that early musical education can set the foundation for a child's future academic and personal success. Today, many students who began their musical journey with the Musicolor Method continue to thrive in music, with some pursuing careers in the arts, while others enjoy music as a lifelong hobby.
