Our Story

Hi, I’m Andrew! A Park Slope Dad who’s thought a lot about helping children find their unique gift, or what I like to call, “their thing.”

I discovered music can be a great path for personal development and discovery, even if they never become a professional musician. And there’s now tons of studies proving the brain development benefits of learning an instrument.

But how did I get here? It’s the early 2000s and my son Alejandro is in preschool. It’s a lovely school and yet, I can’t leave the classroom. Alejandro has deep attachment issues. He is so terrified that I have to sit in the corner of the class.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which instrument should my child learn first?

We recommend all children start with at least 6 months of piano/keyboard. Because it is physically easier to produce sound, and is visually logically laid out, it builds a foundation quickly and makes comprehension faster. This makes transferring to ANY other instrument much quicker, enjoyable and understandable. However, for children above the age of 8 years old, it is possible to start on any instrument, though we highly recommend keyboard as a foundation.

Do you teach adults?

Yes, but only if you have a child or grandchild actively enrolled with us.

Do you also teach traditional note reading?

Absolutely.
We start with playing first using color as educational scaffolding.  This builds instant excitement, enthusiasm and confidence to keep going when things get more complicated.  Learning to read music is not going to happen overnight, in a week or even months.  It can take years.

Do you have an early childhood music class for toddlers?

Yes we do - our Penguin Pals class is exactly that. Learn more and sign up here.

FAQ image

Do you offer any scholarships or financial aid?

Yes we do. Our music program helps young people activate life skills through music. We would like to make it as accessible as possible, and have limited scholarships available each year for partially subsidized lessons. Please apply here.

Child playing piano at Musicolor Method Park Slope, learning through organized music lessons.

The Power of Organization

July 11, 20242 min read

Not solely the notes and rhythms are supposed to be taught to little children at Musicolor Method Park Slope; they must learn also about organization which will help them for the rest of their lives. Through our comprehensive approach, all students get strong organizational skills as they learn any musical instruments such as piano, voice, guitar, ukulele, bass, flute, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, flugelhorn, drums/percussion , violin , viola , tuba , songwriting or any other intruments.

The importance of organization in music lessons

We major a lot on organizing things at Musicolor Method Park Slope. This refers not just to keeping their sheet music organized or remembering to bring instruments for lessons. It’s concerned with developing a systematic way of learning and practicing music that enhances discipline and efficiency. These organizational skills are needed not only in mastering an instrument but also in achieving success academically and personal growth.

Our systemized method of teaching music

We carefully plan our music lessons so that even young children can adopt some simple organizational techniques. For example breaking down complex pieces into manageable sections during piano lessons helps children systematically approach practice sessions. Vocal exercises and songs are grouped into a structured routine by voice instructors enabling students grow their range and control slowly but surely. Structured learning is common across all instruments we teach including guitar among others.

Advantages of Learning from Us

There are numerous advantages associated with our systemised approach:

Better Concentration: By improving their ability to concentrate due to organization then it implies that children engage in more meaningful practices sessions hence leading to more productivity.

Improved Time Management: Learning how time should be allocated for practice leads to better time management skills.

More Confidence: Feeling equipped because one is well prepared makes children feel better about their musical talent.
