Our Story
Hi, I’m Andrew! A Park Slope Dad who’s thought a lot about helping children find their unique gift, or what I like to call, “their thing.”
I discovered music can be a great path for personal development and discovery, even if they never become a professional musician. And there’s now tons of studies proving the brain development benefits of learning an instrument.
But how did I get here? It’s the early 2000s and my son Alejandro is in preschool. It’s a lovely school and yet, I can’t leave the classroom. Alejandro has deep attachment issues. He is so terrified that I have to sit in the corner of the class.
Through the Musicolor Method, we merge playful melodies with pivotal life skills ensuring your child looks forward to every lesson.
Lessons in the familiar surrounds of home mean a relaxed child, optimal for absorbing both music and life skills.
Inculcating values of discipline and routine becomes more effective in a familiar setting, turning daily home routines into learning experiences.
Early introduction to music fosters confidence, helping them express, communicate, and shite even beyond the piano.
By making lessons a joyous home event, we inspire a lifelong curiosity and love for learning.

"My daughter has been a student at Park Slope Music Lessons for years and it's been a fabulous experience. Piano has helped provide her with a different approach to thinking and learning and she truly enjoys it. The instructors are fantastic and do an amazing job connecting with each student and tailoring their approach to their individual needs. Thank you so much!"
- Kevin DeNoia
"My daughter has never sought to play music professionally, so her continued commitment to her weekly lessons for 12+ years (even with her busy high school schedule), is a testament to how much she truly enjoys being part of the Park Slope Music Lessons family!"
- Caroline Lee
We recommend all children start with at least 6 months of piano/keyboard. Because it is physically easier to produce sound, and is visually logically laid out, it builds a foundation quickly and makes comprehension faster. This makes transferring to ANY other instrument much quicker, enjoyable and understandable. However, for children above the age of 8 years old, it is possible to start on any instrument, though we highly recommend keyboard as a foundation.

We always start with two trial lessons to ensure the best match between your child and the teacher. These trial lessons are 30 minutes each, one week apart and are $75 each. If everything is great, we will move to monthly tuition.

We start with playing first using color as educational scaffolding. This builds instant excitement, enthusiasm and confidence to keep going when things get more complicated. Learning to read music is not going to happen overnight, in a week or even months. It can take years.
Yes we do - our Penguin Pals class is exactly that. Learn more and sign up here.

The Musicolor Method, founded by Andrew Ingkavet, is a groundbreaking approach to music education that blends color, creativity, and music theory in a unique way. This method was created in response to a personal challenge faced by Ingkavet when trying to find appropriate music lessons for his son, Alejandro. Unable to find suitable materials for young learners, Ingkavet developed a system that uses color-coded music notation to make learning more accessible and enjoyable for children as young as four years old. The Musicolor Method has since gained popularity for its ability to teach music while nurturing essential life skills like focus, discipline, and confidence.
One of the most innovative aspects of the Musicolor Method is its use of color to simplify music notation. By associating musical notes with colors, young learners can easily identify and play them, making music education less intimidating and more intuitive. This technique accelerates the learning process by providing children with a visual and tactile way to connect with music. The method is designed to be accessible to even preliterate children, allowing them to begin learning music at an earlier age than traditional methods would allow
The Musicolor Method goes beyond just teaching music; it integrates valuable life skills into its lessons. The approach fosters creativity, concentration, and emotional expression, all of which contribute to a child's overall development. As students engage with the method, they not only learn to play music but also develop important cognitive and emotional skills that can help them succeed in other areas of life. By creating a safe and supportive environment, the Musicolor Method encourages children to express themselves confidently, which can have lasting benefits well into adulthood.
For children taking music lessons, in particular, we offer lessons for the following musical instruments:
Piano
Voice
Guitar
Ukulele
Bass
Flute
Saxophone
Clarinet
Trumpet
Trombone
Flugelhorn
Drums & percussion
Violin
Violin
Tuba
Songwriting
And more!
Each child is unique, and the Musicolor Method recognizes this by offering personalized lessons tailored to the individual needs of the student. The one-on-one instruction ensures that every child progresses at their own pace, while the teacher adapts the curriculum to align with their learning style. This personalized approach helps children stay engaged and motivated throughout their musical journey, whether they are learning piano, guitar, drums, or another instrument.
Since its inception, the Musicolor Method has expanded beyond its roots in Brooklyn, reaching families worldwide. With a growing network of teachers, the method is now available in various locations, allowing more children to experience its benefits. Additionally, Musicolor Method teachers often perform live, offering students the opportunity to see their instructors in action and bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world musicianship. This vibrant community continues to inspire young musicians and their families, offering a nurturing environment where music is both fun and transformative.
